Maintenance - Saint Augustine
Grass
| Maintenance depends upon the temperature, water
levels, fertilization and mowing schedules. Higher temperatures are the best growing
medium for this grass and it will have to be mown and fertilized more in the growth stage.
When cooler temperatures set in the grass grows slower and there is less mowing involved
and fertilizers should be applied late in the fall to promote early spring greening. |
 |
Part of your maintenance program
should involve a routine of searching for white grubs the in mid - summer. And if more
than 5 are found with a square foot measures should be taken immediately.

Augustine - Maintenance |
Maintenance: Fertilization and watering according
to your soil. Mowing depends upon your particular taste anywhere from 1-3 inches, usually
on a 5, 7, or 10-day schedule. In the fall mow ˝ inch higher to promote density and
preparation for the winter cycle.
Fertilization: A starter fertilizer should be used in the
beginning and monthly additions of 1lb/1000sq to achieve rapid growth. If too mush
fertilizer is added the extra growth will cause thatching and increase in insect problems.
Watering: On the coastal areas with average rainfall it can
survive quite well without the addition of water except in the preliminary planting.
Further inland if the rainfall isnt sufficient water on a scheduled basis depending
upon the water holding properties of your soil.
Weeding/Diseases: If properly taken of weeds are not a problem and raising the
mowing ˝ inch in the fall will help keep the weeds out; otherwise you will have to apply
weed killers if they become too much of a problem. The number one insect is the cinch bug
along with several others. Diseases include brown patch and gray leaf being the main ones.
Nematodes are a problem in dryer areas and pesticides and fungicides will have to be
applied when these problems occur. A weed free and low insect damage lawn can be had with
the proper management and observation and knowing the most opportune time for either of
these can begin at the count agents office gathering information an your areas needs.
