and pastures. Establishment is by sod following the recommendations found at www.sodding.com - At this time Seedland.com
does not carry the St. Augustine seed due to a crop failure and
shortage in 1999, 2000, 2001 & 2002. ---
It is currently unknown when seed will be available. |
 |
Establishment: Sodding, sprigging
(plugging) and seeding
(seeds are in great demand and may not be currently available) on a prepared ground and with the
addition of fertilizer and watering as needed in your area.
NO SEEDS ARE AVAILABLE AT
THIS TIME
You must plug, sprig or
sod to establish.
The reason is!!!
Because this plant does NOT set seeds well. That makes if
very difficult to create the conditions (weather, management
techniques) needed to produce seeds. In addition, many times
the seeds are not viable. This means it makes seeds, but the
germination is zero or very low. Because of this difficulty most companies have gave up
on attempting to grow Saint Augustine seeds. Just simply to
expensive and too much of a risky gamble (even for farmers).
Maintenance depends upon the temperature, water levels,
fertilization and mowing schedules. Higher temperatures are the best growing medium for
this grass and it will have to be mown and fertilized more in the growth stage. When
cooler temperatures set in the grass grows slower and there is less mowing involved and
fertilizers should be applied late in the fall to promote early spring greening. Part of
the maintenance program should involve a routine of searching for white grubs the in mid -
summer. And if more than 5 are found with a square foot measures should be taken
immediately.

Augustine - SEED PRODUCTION |
Currently there is
only one US company growing St. Augustine seed, though several others are working on
production trials. St. Augustine is a plant in which the timing is very critical to
produce viable seed. During the 1998 growing season a small quantity was produced and then
sold during spring of 1999. However the seed production attempted in 1999
and 2000 was a total
failure due to zero germination of the seed crop (most likely caused by weather). So no
seed are now available --- Only seed produced from
the Raleigh variety of St. Augustine are grown. There may be seed available in
spring 2002, but most likely the seed will be in very limited quantities because of the inherent
production problems of this grass.
