At this time Seedland.com
does not carry St. Augustine seed due to a crop failure and
shortage for the past several years.
It is currently unknown when seed will be widely available. Seedland does however sell a variety of
Saint Augustine Grass Plugs. |
 |
Establishment: Sodding, sprigging
(plugging) and seeding
(seeds are in great demand and may not be currently available) on a prepared ground and with the
addition of fertilizer and watering as needed in your area. Saint Augustine Lawns and pastures, establishment by sod following the recommendations found at
www.sodding.com.
ST. AUGUSTINE SEEDS ARE NOT AVAILABLE FROM SEEDLAND AT THIS TIME.
SEE OUR SELECTION OF ST AUGUSTINE GRASS PLUGS.
The reason is!!!
Because this plant does NOT set seeds well. That makes it
very difficult to create the conditions (weather, management
techniques) needed to produce seeds. In addition, many times
the seeds are not viable. This means it makes seeds, but the
germination is zero or very low. Because of this difficulty most companies have gave up
on attempting to grow Saint Augustine seeds. Just simply too
expensive and too much of a risky gamble (even for farmers). Occasionally, in recent years, you may find Saint Augustine seeds being sold (sporadically) at some of the larger chain stores.
Maintenance depends upon the temperature, water levels,
fertilization and mowing schedules. Higher temperatures are the best growing medium for
this grass and it will have to be mown and fertilized more in the growth stage. When
cooler temperatures set in the grass grows slower and there is less mowing involved and
fertilizers should be applied late in the fall to promote early spring greening. Part of
the maintenance program should involve a routine of searching for white grubs the in mid -
summer. And if more than 5 are found with a square foot measures should be taken
immediately.
